RESEARCH

Modular Mobility System

An independent SSS research project exploring whether a set of reusable components could let young builders assemble different rideable creations.

The problem

Most rideable products are outgrown quickly and then thrown away, even though the parts are still perfectly good.

The idea

A component system — tubes, joints, wheels and fixings — that can be rebuilt into different configurations as the builder grows.

Development journey

  1. 01 Sketching joint concepts and listing which parts would need to repeat across builds.
  2. 02 Researching safe load paths and which materials are realistic for a small workshop.
  3. 03 Planning printed test joints before any full build is attempted.

What we learned

  • Reusability is mostly a joint problem, not a frame problem.
  • Safety review has to come before any rideable prototype.

Next step

Print and load-test a first joint concept.
